Educational tuition assistance for an employee

Q. Our university would like to reimburse an employee $1,000 to offset tuition expenses in their pursuit of a doctorate in education, which would help them in their current duties as an instructor. They are pursuing this degree at another university. Would this payment be taxable income or tax reportable to the employee by our university, which is making the $1,000 payment? A.
