Discrepancy on 1099-NEC

Q. For tax year 2020, we reported an amount we shouldn't have reported on a 1099-NEC. Around May 2021 we sent a correction to the IRS showing a zero amount 1099-NEC along with a 1096 cover. A few days ago the payee contacted us to report that the IRS was reviewing his tax returns and increasing his taxes because of the unreported income. Copies of the report were sent to the payee so he could send to the IRS. We have been trying to contact the IRS but it seems that they are not taking calls.…
