Understanding TINs with a Letter and Reporting Requirements

Q. I have received a W-9 with a TIN ending in the letter K. I have never received this type of TIN before. Please explain what this represents and should I issue a 1099 if it is a reportable item. A. (Answered by IOFM's third-party tax advisor) A TIN would not have a letter in it. Per this page on the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/tin/taxpayer-identification-numbers-tin) a TIN contains 9 digits, as in numbers.
