Non-profit sales tax exemption

Q. I work for a non-profit based in NY and we are exempt from paying sales tax. There is a bit of confusion about exemption. We conduct business with quite a few out of state businesses. Can we provide the vendor with our exemption certificate and be excused from paying taxes? Or does exemption not apply in these cases, with out of state businesses able charge tax for their goods or services?
