1099 reporting of hardship payments made to landlords directly

Q. Our hospital has been given donations to help patient's family with hardship situations. We have been asked to make payments directly to rental agencies and landlords. Several of these payees are individuals or LLC's. Should we code these payments as Rent payments for 1099 reporting purposes or as 1099-Misc, Box 3 for other income? The payee did not perform a service for our hospital so, because of that, we thought that these payments would be considered as other income to the landlords.…
